The fishing was taking place a good 160 miles north of Dutch Harbor. On board the 156-foot factory trawler Cape Horn was the owner and captain, Karsten Hjelm. They were to be trawling for Flathead Sole, the seabed was primarily sand and the average fishing depth was 65 fathoms. The warps used were 270 fathoms long on average, and the tow speed was 3 knots.
